Today we’d like to introduce you to Cortney Peck.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I fell in love with coloring hair at Paul Mitchell school. After graduating, I assisted an amazing colorist from NYC that had retired to the beaches of North Carolina and opened Joseph Zell and Company Salon. I learned a lot about class (what do you mean by that? Etiquette? Being classy? providing high-end service/care? and making clients feel valued and, of course, the secret behind that southern sun-kissed blonde! Then, I wanted test my skills in the north so I headed back to my home state to work at Five Elements Salon and Spa in Rutland, Vermont. All though I had a great experience there, I wanted more. I needed people to be as excited and as particular about hair as I was. I needed Boston. So, I applied to Jeffrey Lyle Salon on Newbury street where I spent 6.5 years learning from the best of the best. I perfected my craft, grew as a stylist, and was able to build the confidence thanks to my clients and to Jeffrey Lyle and his team to open Cortney Kay Studio in Needham, MA this spring!
Has it been a smooth road?
Honestly, it’s going to sound cliche, but I would tell women don’t be afraid. Take chances! Work hard, be kind, be genuine and believe in yourself. You have to take risks to gain big rewards and it’s so worth it! Nothing is permanent so if something isn’t working, make changes. Having to adapt or change paths is not a failure as long as you are always moving forward. You really can control your own destiny if you put in the work and push yourself.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Cortney Kay Studio story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Hairstylist and I recently opened my own salon. I specialize in Balayage which is a free hand painted highlight technique. It gives a very natural grow out because of the way I mimic what the sun did to all our hair as children. I am proud to give this service because I believe in enhancing my clients’ hair color instead of changing its overall appearance. I do everything from subtle to super blonde, but the grow out is always soft and the dimension is beautiful.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I love what I do. I think I make other women feel good about themselves and I think as a whole we as women should take opportunities to make each other feel better in whatever way we can.
