Conversations with the Inspiring Julliana Araujo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julliana Araujo.

Julliana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for makeup began while I was in middle school. I would help my mom around the house, save my allowance and ask my mom to take me to any drugstore so I could buy makeup. When I had some free time during the day, I would test out new looks and get creative! A few years later, when makeup artists began making youtube videos, and I found out about it, I was ecstatic! It was hard to focus in school when all I wanted to do was go home and learn a new technique and watch videos from incredible artists. My parents quickly learned about my passion for makeup and I’ll never forget the day my mom, who had so many bills and was still just getting into her career, took me to Sephora and bought me a makeup kit in order for me to practice on others. I realized she really believed in me. From that day on, I practiced on friends and family and really invested my time into learning.

High school graduation was coming up, as well as choosing your career choice/college. I choose to go to beauty school and just as summer was coming to an end, I realized that although I had a passion for beauty and makeup, I also had a great passion for Special Needs and although I struggled with that decision for a few years, I came to realize that I didn’t have to choose, and I can do both of the things I enjoy and love. Working and studying Behavioral Health/Special Needs did not stop me from following my dreams in the makeup field, as I continued to work really hard, traveled to another country to learn more about makeup, and I’ve built a clientele that sees how passionate I am about it and about making them happy.

In the meantime, I got married to a very supportive husband who is just as passionate as I am, who motivates and encourages me to do better and want better every day. In these years our family grew and we now have two little toddler boys who are my biggest motivation! I can’t thank my family, friends, and clients enough for all the support they have given me on my journey. Because of their love and support, I always want to learn more, practice more and be better than I was yesterday. I’m so very thankful!

Has it been a smooth road?
It had never been a smooth road for me. It was actually the opposite of smooth. Especially in the very beginning, which was when I learned the hard way that my parents were getting a divorce. It’s something that really shook me as I was so young. Makeup was something that took my mind off of it, which is when I realized my passion for it. Because of everything I went through and all the self-confidence struggles I had, I never saw myself as “good enough”. I always wanted to do makeup on others and put myself out there, but that “good enough” part always really stood in my way. Because of the supportive people in my life, they are always there to remind me that I am indeed “good enough” to do whatever I want to do. That’s what kept me going. Although I still struggle with confidence in myself and in my work, I remind myself I won’t stop until I am where I want to be. My advice to any woman who is struggling with self-confidence and feeling that they aren’t “good enough”, you are good enough, you are great and you will be amazing at anything you put your heart into. If you stumble along the way, get up and keep going, the confidence you need is in you, work hard until you find it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Julliana Araujo Makeup story. Tell us more about the business.
As far as makeup, I have given classes, I’ve done makeup for photoshoots, weddings, bodybuilding competitions, parties and regular day to day makeup. I can’t pinpoint what I like doing most, because I just love creating a customized look for each client. Just being there and getting to know them, their skin type, what they like, etc. is what I really enjoy the most. I want to create something they feel even more confident with and I won’t let them get up from the chair until they are completely happy at how they are leaving. I have to say I’m proud of my pickiness, which is weird, but very true. I want everything as flawless and close to perfect as possible. I want the makeup to look as if someone photoshopped it so I may take longer and overlook everything many times, but its because I really want each client to live that special moment just as they pictured it.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
This may sound cliche, but don’t give up! Its easier to give up then to keep going. Not everyone will love your style or appreciate your work, but that is OK! Remind yourself that you can’t please everyone and continue to express yourself through your work. Don’t allow that to stop you from achieving your dreams and goals. Set a realistic goal for yourself, and chase after it. In this career, there is always tons of room for more practice and more learning. Keep reminding yourself of why you started this in the first place and let that be your biggest motivation to work harder at where you want to be.
