Today we’d like to introduce you to Benedetto Megidesh.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My passion for woodwork and art developed through my admiration for my father, a master builder and designer. He specialized in architecture and built many beautiful buildings; he also ran a successful fabric store in Tripoli Libya, where I grew up. There’s one memory of my father that that stands out in particular; around the age of three, my father had returned home from a trip to Italy with a copy of Pinocchio. I think the story of the Gepetto (Pinocchio’s “father”) wishing for his puppet to be real, resonated with me sub consciously and has influenced my work since then. Everything I create, whether a piece of furniture, a painting, a sculpture or a kitchen, I put my heart and soul into the craftsmanship. I do not just create beautiful objects; my creations have an identity and a life of their own – just like Pinocchio.
Please tell us about your art.
For the last 30 years, I have designed and handcrafted custom furniture, kitchens, built-ins, paneling, millwork, cabinetry, staircases and doors for various clients, interior designers and architects through New England. In more recent years, I have been focusing on abstract furniture art, oil paintings and sculptures. I would consider myself equally a woodworker and a traditional artist, although always with an impractical style and unconventional method.
Outside of my custom work, my process for design and execution is always changing. For my art, I almost never follow my original drawing – the finished piece needs to be completely original, not an exact copy of my first idea.
For my layered oil paintings, I have a very unique process that enables a very textured and stained-glass look. I begin with one layer of oil paint, and then I apply my own special formula on top, and then I repeat by adding another layer of oil paint (a different color) and my special formula and then continue to repeat this another 25-50 times. I have been experimental with this process for over 25 years and I have finally perfected it.
I intend to provoke deep thought and emotion through my work, as my inspirations derive from my life experience, through the difficult and the beautiful. I hope people can look at my work and have it resonated with something personal to them.
