Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Freitas.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always loved art ever since I was a little kid. Fast forward to college where I really focused on my love for Printmaking. My professor at the time, Randal, really pushed me to dig deeper in my process and perfect it. After I graduated, I interned with a group called the Biennial Project based out of East Boston. I made some great connections which led me to be a part of the artist-run gallery where I currently show my work.
Please tell us about your art.
Right now, my focus is printmaking, abstract painting and video. I’ve also done some installation work and would love to re-visit that in the future. My work has always revolved around the idea of identity, why we label ourselves, what those labels mean, what society labels us and how all of these aspects shape us. I’ve always been fascinated with other cultures and people’s upbringing and how these factors help form who you become. My work is intentionally direct, intimate and sometimes uncomfortable. Recently, I’ve touched on topics such as self-harm, suicide and body image and positivity. I want people to look at my work and open their minds to a new perspective, ultimately starting a dialogue.
What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Art is a necessary part of culture. One can only hope that your community will embrace you and realize your significance. It’s difficult to stay whether it is easier or harder. I think with social media, art has been more readily available to all people which is a huge plus for me. Cities need to provide a support system and continue to invest in the art world.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I currently show at Atlantic Works gallery in East Boston. I do also have an active Instagram and Facebook page.
