Today we’d like to introduce you to SueVee.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up to the crooning sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Lady Day, The Beatles, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Leadbelly, The Commodores (just to name a few), have really helped me to become the multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/writer that I am today!
I started singing since I stepped out of the womb :), but my first “official” singing experience began when I was 5, in the Twelfth Baptist Church children’s gospel choir, of Roxbury, and throughout my adolescence I sang in the National Center of Afro-American Artists’ production of Black Nativity. I was also a member of my school chorus, concert choir, girls’ glee, and madrigals including singing the National Anthem for numerous school basketball and hockey games, the DCL All-Star Shoot-Out tournament. I have also had the distinguished honor of singing the Anthem at Red Sox and Celtic’s games.
Having musical background in violin and piano as a child, I picked up the guitar at the age of 23 and taught myself to play and write songs, and in the same year moved to Los Angeles to pursue my musical goals and deepen my journey to self-discovery. In continuing my musical exploration, at the age of 24 I picked up the drums, bass guitar, and re-introduced myself to the keys. In 2013, I joined forces with renowned Los Angeles Producer & Keyboardist for KC and the Sunshine Band, Robert E. Lee, to bring to life the Vintage Soul Project. The EP being an unapologetic love letter to Motown with the majority of songs written by yours truly!
During my time in Southern California I also played in experimental rock bands Elixir No. 6 and The Serotonin Experiment of San Diego, as well as many solo gigs. I have performed all over the country including residencies in Los Angeles at the House of Blues, and The Smoke House. I have performed at music festivals such as Serenity Gathering in California and Mile of Music in Wisconsin and Boston Pride! My local gigs have included Alibi in the Liberty Hotel, Sam Adams Brewery, Lizard Lounge, and Burren Bar.
Please tell us about your art.
I create music that speaks to me, that inspires me, and that expresses me. I know that we are all inter-connected so the things that I am feeling, and I am going through, I know someone out there can relate to it! I am hopeful that the music I create manifests a safe space for others to feel vulnerable, and even say “yes, I feel that way too, and that’s ok!” Because truly that is what music has done for me! Countless times I can say music has saved my life, by either inspiring me to write rather than to drink away my problems or giving me something to relate to so I know that I am not alone. This society is set up for us to feel alone, especially in this crazy age of social media, authentic meetings just don’t happen nearly as often as they should. I’m hopeful that my artistic creations can help illuminate the path of self-discovery for others, as I embark on the same journey via a very public platform. My main messages being self-love, tolerance, and compassion for everything/everyone we encounter!
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The gift and the curse that is social media, especially in regards to those artists looking to take their career to the next level. If you are trying to reach a wider audience a following is super essential, and I know I am personally struggling with this aspect!. I also feel the age of information/technology has really watered down artistic content almost anything is considered art nowadays. Which is awesome because I do feel art is a universal language that comes in many forms, but for those who are serious about art and have devoted their lives to it very often go unnoticed because of the flood of content.
