Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Miga.
Beth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a wife, a mother of two girls and a newborn photographer. I love doing girly things with my daughters. I love exploring new cities. Country music makes me happy. So does wine and any cocktail containing St. Germain. The beach is my happy place. I love a night out but these days I love a night in, snuggled on the couch with my husband binge watching Netflix even more.
I have been in business as a professional newborn photographer since 2008 and I specialize in authentically capturing baby’s first year.
The first year of baby’s life is one of the most amazing and also one of the most fleeting seasons of life as a family. For many it comes after years of hoping and dreaming. It is a time that you want to be able to hold on to and look back on as the years pass. A time that you want captured authentically, but with all of the right angles and lighting so you love the way YOU look too. As a mother of two girls who are now twelve and fourteen years old, I love looking though photos from their baby days and remembering all of the little details. Their sweet chubby cheeks and baby smiles. How tiny they were as newborns. That toddler walk. Us laughing and snuggling together. I can’t stop time but those photos have the ability to bring those days closer. This is what I specialize in capturing for my clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
Building a business certainly has had its share of ups and downs. Mixing friendship and business was a struggle in the early days. So was learning to balance business, marriage and motherhood. Starting a business takes serious HUSTLE which for me looked like mornings shooting, afternoons with my kids and lots of late nights and weekends working. I want to be and do all of the things and asking for help is not one of my strengths. I would like to say I have gotten better about managing my schedule and getting help, but like everything else it is a work in progress, changing as my kids grow and my business grows. Being a business owner also means spending a good portion of my time doing things that are not related to my creative passion. Taxes. Accounting. Scheduling. Writing copy. SEO. The business side of things is often unglamorous but committing to doing the unfun things week in and week out is part of the package.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in authentically capturing baby’s first year. My style can best be described as light, airy and naturally posed. I keep things simple with a focus on comfortable baby led poses, authentic connection and flattering soft light. I love the simplicity of a brand new baby on a white blanket. Or in Dad’s arms. Or snuggling with Mom. I am especially passionate about mothers getting in pictures. And loving those pictures. Which means a relaxed session with soft flattering light and all of the right angles.
I offer both in home and lifestyle studio newborn sessions. In home sessions offer my clients the convenience of me coming to them and the opportunity to incorporate areas of the home, nursery and other personal details into the session. My Back Bay studio is an all-white space furnished with a couch and bed for naturally posed lifestyle pictures and blankets for posing baby. It has a large bay window that provides some of the dreamiest natural light I have ever found. My studio sessions feature the same natural baby and parent posing as my in home sessions and are perfect for those that love the light airy look but don’t have that type of space or light in their own home.
In addition to newborn sessions I also offer maternity, baby and motherhood sessions at the studio as well as beach and park sessions during the summer and fall months.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is an amazing place to be a creative entrepreneur! There is a great energy here and I have connected with many groups of other creative that believe in community over competition. I am especially grateful to have found a group of local photographers that have become friends and “coworkers” even though technically we are competitors.
