Meet Miriam Meza of Miriam Meza Hair and Makeup on Newbury

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Meza.

Miriam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I come from a place where Beauty is a staple. I was always the chosen one to do the Revlon “frost and glow” highlights on my friends. I moved to Boston 15 years ago where I met people who saw my talent and encouraged me to pursue beauty school. My lucky stars aligned and I landed a job on Newbury St. at Salon Acote, A staple salon for Back Bay residents. Traveling to NYC and Miami Beach often, I had the opportunity to attend several classes and workshops with the best in the industry. Learning techniques on classic cuts and creative color from Vidal Sassoon and Goldwell. After mastering the cut and color classes I was ready for a new challenge. I moved to South Beach, joining the Safar Miami salon team. Enrolling in the MAC cosmetics PRO program, it opened my passion for creativity. Living in Miami gave me the opportunity to collaborate with models and photographers, doing photo shoots and fashion shows all year around. One of the things I took advantage of was attending Art Basel where I got inspired from all kinds of artists and personalities from the contemporary art scene. Moving back to Boston opened the door to new opportunities. I entered the bridal business and continued my education on the art of bridal hair, taking one of the highly acclaimed boot camps with hairdresser Sharon Blain. Back at Salon Acote I reconnected with old clients and I made many new ones. Working on Newbury St. could be challenging, with numerous talented hairdressers and makeup artists on the street. I’m very proud I have worked with the same company all these years. Establishing not only a solid clientele and further development of my technical skills in hair and makeup, but also learning the business side of the beauty industry.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
In the early stage of my career I struggle believing in myself. It takes years to establish strong foundations and be confident on giving the results a client is expecting. It is important to learn from your mistakes and move forward. Every time someone sits in my chair I give myself completely. When I’m doing hair and makeup I’m in my happy place!

Staying up to date on new trends and remaining constantly aware of the beauty world is always a challenge. But the real challenge for me is to balance family life. You have to be present and flexible whenever your client decides to do their roots last minute. It is important to be thankful to all the clients who wait patiently every time I take time off.

Miriam Meza Hair and Makeup – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Being a hairdresser and makeup artist is a lot of fun. I’m very lucky to work in an upbeat salon, where there is always music playing and a very welcoming environment. I have a wide range of clientele, from politicians to international students. I like giving clients their first hair color experience. Coloring your hair can be intimidating, expensive and hard to keep up. I’ve seen all colors of the rainbow surge in popularity the past few years but what I love the most is subtle face-framing highlights, and baby lights. If you’re brunette, this is a great way to brighten things up without going totally blonde. Dry haircuts are my “go to” when clients are afraid of taking too much length off. When the hair is dry, we can really see what’s going on.

In recent years I began offering on site bridal hair and makeup. I travel to hotels and venues for intimate weddings and small bridal parties. While creating looks for my bridal and special events makeup, I gravitate towards natural looks with a pop of glamour. I’m a little pushy when it comes to trying out airbrush and fake lashes.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
While consistency and professionalism are the key to maintain your clientele, the passion you have for all things related to beauty will be the most important aspect to have a successful and long lasting career. When I see clients coming in for a second or third appointments I feel successful. I have not only create a business transaction but I have also created a long lasting relationship.
