Meet Alyssa Hitchcock of Lovely Bones Studio in Leominster

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Hitchcock.

Alyssa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
So, I don’t have a story of holding a camera since I was little. In fact, I never had any prior experience taking photographs or even holding a real camera. I was, however, an art kid. I have always loved drawing, writing, painting and those were my chosen creative outlets for most of my life. I have always been very particular about my artwork and put my heart and soul into it, even if I didn’t show it off to anyone. It wasn’t until after I got married, that I thought about pursuing a career in photography. I had tried numerous jobs, going to school for other things unrelated… but it never stuck. Nothing ever felt right. I thrive off of being able to create something- and if I’m not doing that I cannot do anything successfully. My husband gave me the big push to purchase my first camera and lens, he said, “go big or go home babe!” So I went big!

I started with photographing my two children and some friends. I quickly developed an insane passion for it. It was the freeing, alive feeling I had been missing for so long. I needed that push and room to be imaginative and creative. From there on out I’ve been learning and growing with every photo session and I cannot wait to see where this takes me.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting any business is never perfectly smooth. I have some discouragements, lack of motivation for a little bit. I was seeing what other photographers were putting out and getting trapped into the comparison game. It was toxic and just no good for me and my path. I have had so much support from my husband, my friends, and fellow photographers I’ve been lucky enough to have the chance to befriend. They have all helped me and my confidence and drive in more ways than I can put into words. Having a positive support system is so essential for growth. I feel very blessed to have had those to keep pushing me forward and no let me stay down. I’ve happily moved on from that insecurity and am thriving every day!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’ve named my small photography business Lovely Bones Studio. I am specializing in intimate elopement/wedding and couples photography. I am a bit of a moody artist to begin with. I love to find beauty in the strange, dark, and different. I am extremely drawn to details and how bits and pieces can tell a beautiful story. I am also a hopeless romantic so that drives me towards my couples. Each love story is unique and I want to learn and connect with my clients on a personal level and leave them with some captivating frozen moments of themselves. I’m extremely proud of my work and that it leaves people feeling something. I strive for all of my images to hold an energy and emotion, so when you look at that photo- it’s igniting something inside of your soul. I think what sets me apart from others is my vision. I don’t see things just as they are, a small poorly lit dirty corner of a room can hold a perfect spot for emotion. Beautiful places and landscapes are amazing, but I can also find and create beauty in the seemingly ordinary.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a weird child haha, I spent a good amount of time alone. I was always interested in creating stories; with dolls, with my poetry and painting. Those things consumed a lot of my time- and eating all the snacks I could of course. I went to art camp all summer long one summer and it as amazing for me being able to learn all different mediums. I was somewhat quiet and insecure, always second guessing myself and feeling some sort of pull towards darkness. It lead me down a destructive path for a little bit in my teenage years, but I overcame and I use that now more than anything. I take all of that darkness inside of me and create something captivating. I think that’s why I’m so drawn to photograph the way that I do.
