Conversations with the Inspiring Talia Hirsch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Talia Hirsch.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Talia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve spent the last few years focusing on bettering my understanding about clean ingredients and trying to incorporate them more into and onto my body. I am very passionate about utilizing whole ingredients for their naturally wonderful properties. I strive to make things that are not just allergen free versions of typical foods, but that taste great in their own right.

Made primarily from a base of organic sweet potatoes, coconut milk and dates, the pudding is vegan, gluten free, soy free and it contains no added sugars, thickeners or preservatives.

The texture is smooth and creamy just like a custard, and the flavors range from classic chocolate and vanilla to more unique matcha vanilla, chai spice, mint chocolate and cinnamon spice.

The pudding is so tasty on its own and comes in perfectly sized on-the-go jars, but it can also serve as the base to a fruit and granola bowl or as the cream filling to a vegan fruit tart or chocolate cream pie!

I officially launched Plant-Based Provisions in November of 2017 with an online store and participation in winter farmer’s markets. Since then, I have grown a base of loyal and happy customers through selling in retail stores around Cambridge, Somerville and Winchester as well as participating in events and summer markets. I look forward to seeing where the next few months will lead!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not! I come from a digital marketing background, so while this has helped me with building a web presence and social media, I had to learn a ton about setting up a business, accounting, licensing, packaging and selling a product, to name a few. I’m still learning new things every day. My biggest piece of advice would be to look to more established brands you admire in your industry and learn from them. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification or help. I’m very fortunate to have met and work with some amazing entrepreneurs in the health food space around Boston, and I have learned so much from their stories and paths.

what should we know about Plant-Based Provisions? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My goal in launching Plant-Based Provisions is to provide a tasty vegan and allergen free option for people seeking healthy desserts. A product that isn’t trying to replace something else, but that tastes great in its own right. Something that makes people feel good when they eat it. From “oh my god this is totally real pudding” to “this tastes like soft ice cream” we’ve had some amazing comments from believers and skeptics alike.

We are mostly known for our pudding jars, frozen pudding pops and for being an allergen free company. I am so proud that the product I sell every day is a totally clean option. It ticks all of the boxes nutrition-wise. So many alternative desserts on shelves today are full of refined sugars or use processed thickening agents like guar gum or carageenan. It’s very important to me that a customer could come read my label and recognize every single ingredient.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
My dad loves to reference old parent teacher conferences where the teachers would tell him “you know, Talia always seems to do what she thinks she should do, or what seems right, not just what is popular.” I think that I have continued to carry this mentality and try to lead by example.
