Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Faletra, MS, MPH, RDN.
Megan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story honestly begins back when I was a child growing up in a very Italian-American family. I am a dual Italian/USA citizen and my grandmother had a huge influence on my life and how I viewed food. She taught me so much about what it means to respect the food that nourishes our bodies and was the perfect example of what a strong food culture represents. So to say, my passion for food and the importance it holds in our lives is deeply ingrained would be an understatement.
While I always valued really high-quality local food, it wasn’t until I was traveling in Indonesia after graduating with an undergraduate degree in marketing communications that I became interested in nutrition. I was pretty miserable and uninspired at my current marketing job and had been craving more of a reconnection with the world and my impact on it. While traveling in Indonesia I saw for the first time what chronic malnutrition and food insecurity looks like and it was like something struck me and I became acutely aware that working in global health nutrition was the direction I was supposed to take my life.
So I went back to school for international nutrition and global health and continued my education to become a clinical dietitian. During my time in graduate school, I had the opportunity to work full-time on a variety of global health nutrition projects in developing countries around the world, and my passion for global health nutrition was only further solidified.
After graduating, I knew that the only way that I truly would be able to make the impact I wanted to would be by starting my own business, and so I founded The Well Essentials a consumer-facing sustainable living digital platform, and The Well Co.. a consulting agency for social impact has driven social enterprises.
No day is the same these days, but I am so thankful for the work I get to do every day in educating consumers on how they can impact global health equity through their daily choices, and supporting incredible non-profits and social enterprises who truly are using business as a source for good.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think it would be hard to find someone who said that their business was all smooth sailing, starting your own business is hard! But also very much worth it. In the beginning, I was looking to so many people for advice which ultimately clouded my own vision. Once I decided to just stay in my lane and trust the ups and downs that are owning your own business, I found my voice and my business truly began to flourish… as did the impact I was making.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Well Essentials and The Well Co. – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize in sustainable living, integrative nutrition, and global health equity. When it comes to my work I am most proud of the impact I have been able to have in reshaping the way people see the world and their impact on it. I think that what sets me the most apart from others is my unwavering optimism about our ability to impact global health, and the way in which I am able to translate what can be very heavy information in a way that is easily obtainable by the general public.
What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The universe is rigged in your favor, and we need more empowered women going for their dreams…not less. As long as you have a vision, passion, and patience I truly believe that you will be successful.
