Today we’d like to introduce you to Shannon Hickey.
Shannon, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I have always had a camera in my hand, I knew I wanted to become a photographer, but wasn’t sure how to go about pursuing that dream. A couple years ago my best friend introduced me to her cousin’s wife, who had started her own photography business and was willing to help show me the way. I started assisting her at weddings and events, learning everything I could from her. Through her I have met another photographer from whom I have been working with and learning from. These two women have been my mentors and have given me the confidence and direction I needed to pursue my own business. I love seeing women help other women become successful, and I really hope to pay it forward one day as they have done for me.
I just got married myself last August. Two months before our wedding, my fiancé’s mother was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. She was determined to make it to the wedding & dance with her son. She immediately started treatments and was there for the wedding, looking so beautiful and strong. The 2 photographers mentioned above, Liz of Pure Style Photography, and Alicia of Alicia Petitti Photography, were my wedding photographers. They knew my future mother-in-law’s health situation, and on top of working so hard as they always do, went above and beyond to capture so many great moments with her there. I cannot thank them enough for capturing those beautiful moments with her on our day. She sadly passed away on our 3-month anniversary, and I am so grateful every day to them for giving us the most amazing memories and photos of Mary. Since that day, I knew this was my passion and calling; that I wanted to give brides & grooms ever lasting memories of their families and friends on their special days. As of May, 2018, I can now officially say I am a full-time photographer!
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I love capturing memories and moments in my client’s life that they will have forever. I am a lifestyle photographer, and therefore love to photograph moments as they happen. I want my clients to know how much I appreciate being a part of their big moments and hope to capture them in the best way possible for them to treasure forever!
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
I think the role of artists has become even more significant. There are so many tragedies happening all around us that every moment spent with family and loved ones is precious. Being the one to capture these great moments to remember for a lifetime is beyond important to me.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Social media is a great tool for artist these days. Please check out my Facebook page or website. Of course, it would be even better to be considered for photographing your wedding, engagement, family, newborn baby, etc. I would love the opportunity to be a part of your special day!
