Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna and Kate Thoene.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We are a mother (Donna)/daughter (Kate) team. Donna has many years of retail experience, including TJX Corp, and Kate is a former fashion model. We decided to team up and take the crazy plunge into our own retail operation when we happened upon the coolest little shopping area in West Acton and fell in love with it. We sealed the deal after studying the regional demographics and noting the lack of great, affordable boutique shopping, opening our doors in April of 2017.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think it’s been relatively smooth for us. But, we have taken very little time off during our first year of business and are constantly working on growing the business to a point where we can both make a living doing what we love.

Our shop is bright, friendly, and full of great styles and cool accessories and gifts at reasonable prices. We dress women from high school through retirement, host private shopping events, and do pop-ups in various locations around metro-west. We especially take pride in our ability to give back to the community and do so by hosting many benefits for local charities and non-profit organizations.
Wish is a casual life-style mix of clothing, featuring four different denim lines, fun tops ranging from tees to tunics, and sweaters to jackets. We have an extensive selection of jewelry and scarves as well. This spring, we knocked it out of the park with a fantastic assortment of dresses, rompers and skirts. We’ve had young women from many towns coming in and having a blast choosing their dresses for graduation and other big events. We pride ourselves on helping our customers find the right look for their bodies, personalities, and the event they are buying for. Since we are a mother/daughter buying team, our selections are appropriate for a wide range of ages and body-types. We also offer styling tips to help our customers get the most out of a new purchase. We spend a great deal of time and energy on our social media, posting shots of both Kate and I wearing our styles so that our followers can see how things look. We also feature our customers modeling our looks both in the shop and around the world! One of the best compliments we receive repeatedly is “your prices are great!” We work hard to find brands that are well-made, super-stylish, unique, but won’t break the bank and our customers are loving it!
What were you like growing up?
Donna: loved reading and playing store and other pretend businesses as a little girl.
Kate: loved singing, acting and fashion.
