Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy AfriQue.
Roy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
AfriQue Events & Marketing, LLC is an event planning & promotional company based here in Boston since 2010.
Our idea was and still is to create exciting nightlife for the African diaspora and friends in the Boston area, neighboring cities and states. We felt it was very lacking in Boston compared to other cities like New York & DC.
We brought the idea to life when we created our weekly club night at Guilt Nightclub dubbed PASSPORT SATURDAYS “Champagne of Boston Parties” at SOCIAL FRIDAYS at SAVVOR LOUNGE. These weekly clubs nights attract hundreds of young professionals in Boston and beyond.
In addition to club nights we host annual signature events. We start the year with African City “Celebration Of culture through music, fashion and art”. Followed by our Memorial Day weekend CRUISE AFRIQUE “All white Party” aboard the Spirit Of Boston. This is our 7th year hosting this event. Making this event the grandfather of them all.
This brings us to summer. Our summer signature events include: ReHab Day cruises also on the Spirit Of Boston, DETOX Pool Party and close the summer off with the AFROPOLITAN “All Black Attire” Midnight CRUISE.
In the past years our calendar year would be closing but not this year. We’re strengthening or mission my adding 2 fall events. This hasn’t been revealed yet but I guess the word is out now.
For the first time we’ll participate in Boston Fashion Week. We’ll give African designers a grand platform to show off Africa’s vibrant, trendy & beautiful culture through Fashion.
Finally our first AFRIQUE GALA will take place in November at one of Boston’s luxurious hotels. This is very exciting to us b’se it’s been a longtime coming.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ooh no! Not at all. The struggle has been real and continues but we’re muscling through one event at a time.
It took us a long time to break through stigmas. It’s my opinion that Boston is not a very open minded city. The venue owners were not open to having an “African Night” and some are still not open to it. We’re forced to take high bar minimums & room rental fees just to get into the door and show them what we offer.
I’m proud to say we have won over most of the venue managers and owners we have worked with and continue to.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AfriQue Events & Marketing, LLC – what should we know?
