Meet Tony Cancel of Top View Aerial Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Cancel.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tony. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Photography has been my passion for a long time. Photography is a very competitive industry, and I knew the importance to stand out. As the drone industry started growing and companies begin to put serious cameras in their consumer drones, I thought it was a great time to capitalize on a technology that, although it was in its infancy, it had great potential. At this time laws about commercial use of drones were confusing at best, and it soon became apparent that my business was going to depend on the FAA regulating an industry which had just begun. Although there were set backs, persistence allowed my company to become one of the first in MA to operate commercially through, what the FAA referred to as Section 333.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think there are still struggles. Unfortunately, the stigma of drones are very much still alive, together with lots of misinformation. When we see news about drones in the media, for the most part, it’s negative. One of the most recurrent questions I get is, Can you spy on someone through a window? Or how much zoom does your drone have? Could you see someone sun bathing in their back yard? And don’t get me wrong, I know their concerns are valid, because we have all heard a story or two on the news, but that stigma makes a lot of people not think of drones as a viable solution for them,

Another huge challenge has been navigating through the regulations imposed by the FAA through the new Part 107. The regulations through Part 107 are a huge improvement from the old Section 333, but it’s not perfect. Cities like Boston that are under restricted airspace are a challenge.

I believe being dedicated and persistent is what has allowed me to become successful in this industry. Even if at times I had to take a step back, it was done with the purpose of getting a broader look, and find that forward path.
