Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Campbell.
Sara, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been designing women’s apparel for over 35 years, supplying major retailers through wholesale since the mid-eighties. A major “moment” for me was reinventing my business model. In 2009 I opened my first bricks and mortar retail establishment in Wellesley. It was initially meant to be a pop-up shop, but has become the “flagship” location out of 18 boutiques (and growing!)
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Each day is a new beginning or a new challenge, presenting a new idea, new design, but also a new worry, a new problem to solve… it keeps me on edge knowing there is no security. I started this business at age 25 and have maintained the same objective throughout the ride, to be able to support myself while being creative. That’s what I try to stay focused on!
Sara Campbell – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sara Campbell is built on a philosophy of giving back to communities while creating a unique, beautiful product and a gracious, transformational shopping experience in our boutiques. So the three things that set us apart are: we are made in the USA, we constantly support charitable organizations, and we strive deliver the very best customer service.
Our commitment to making apparel in the USA has always been one of our trademarks. We believe in paramount quality, so we work closely with our mills and factories. We proudly support jobs in the USA, and when possible, support businesses in our home state of Massachusetts. We want our customer’s purchase to transcend time, in both style and durability, which is why we make our collection here.
Philanthropy has always been synonymous with the Sara Campbell brand. We believe in people helping one another, it’s that simple. In each of the communities where we’re fortunate to have boutiques, we strive to be the best neighbors possible. We proudly host numerous give-back events within our stores that support trusted charitable organizations, both local and national in scale.
The relationships we build and nurture with our clientele are also fundamentally important to us. We strive to provide our guests with service that is warm, welcoming, and memorable from the boutique level all the way up to the CEO level. It is not uncommon for a customer to hear directly from me to plan a collaboration, to ease a worry, or to compliment a Sara Campbell outfit sighting!
My team will tell you I’m constantly saying, “IT TAKES A VILLAGE!” We need each other to make this work. I’m very proud of my team and what we’ve accomplished together.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define my success in relation to what I mentioned earlier; I’ve always wanted to be able to support myself while being creative. I still do not have a certainty that I’ve “made it” in the industry, but I’m proud of what my team and I have accomplished together. I will say that nothing makes me happier than when one of my twenty-something daughters steals a “Sara Campbell” from my closet! That feels like a success in itself. Haha.
