Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg DuBois.
Greg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
When I was a kid, as long back as I can remember, I spent hours a day drawing. I remember being in 6th grade, and one of my classmates was huge into graffiti, and he drew the coolest letters I had ever seen. I was blown away, so I started drawing them and asking him for help with my pieces. These types of random threads I continued to pull throughout my life, learning the things that inspired me. Living art is what I do, and I’ll do what it takes to keep going. Currently photography is what I’ve chosen to pursue.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My personal happiness is tied to the quality of the work I produce, and it’s always been that way. And it’s hard to consistently produce quality work. So as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize it’s not worth forcing anything ever. You don’t have unlimited time, so do what makes sense, and don’t be afraid to pivot and let things evolve. Make decisions only when you have to, and go with what works.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m primarily known for my long exposure photography using various neutral density and special effect filters. I was definitely one of the first photographers to present this style to the Boston Instagram community, and I’ve been acclaimed internationally with sponsorship by the prominent English company LEE Filters and collaboration with Italy’s Manfrotto. But I love a short shutter just as much as anyone, it all depends on the context and subject matter. I’ve been experimenting with infrared photography as well, working with one of the best companies in the business Kolari Vision.
What were you like growing up?
Skateboarding was a huge part of my life growing up and into my 20s. I actually worked at a skate shop for years and helped shoot a lot of community skate videos. We were using final cut pro and 3 chip digital cameras back in the early 2000s. During this time I shot a lot of film photography too. I’ve always liked to joke around and make any situation fun.
