Today we’d like to introduce you to Deanna Jacome.
Deanna, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in New Hampshire, where I drew great inspiration from the natural world that surrounded me. I gravitated towards materials that were seemingly forgotten and undervalued such as spare pieces of wood, acorns, leaves, father’s old college composition books, paper scraps etc. Anything being overlooked, touched my heart and fascinated me, I wanted to appreciate and give the time to what I saw was beautiful. I have always possessed deep love of hand crafting, as an innate love of learning. This led me to receiving my Teaching License (Pre-K-8) and BFA in Art Education and Book Arts from Montserrat College of Art. Once I graduated I knew I needed to keep making, I have always had more ideas than I knew what to do with and I couldn’t have been more excited to create my own art business. I created Shady Tree Maker in the summer of 2015, wanting an opportunity to share with others her love of hand binding books, Turkish Marbled products, and accessories such as clay and crystal jewelry and flower crowns to bring confidence and whimsy into the lives of others.
While continuing to create my home-made products I have pursued my fine arts practice as well through mixed-media collage painting and murals. Moments of my life connecting with the intricacies and seemingly small parts of nature or intimate aspects of life have remained the subjects of my mixed-media paintings.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My fine arts practice primarily consists of mixed-media acrylic paintings, where I combine natural elements and pieces of past paintings, collages, or books. My style is gestural and deeply informed by the natural world in color, form, subject, and composition. I display a spontaneous and curious approach to enjoying nature and how it interacts with the world and who we are.
The homemade goods that make up Shady Tree Maker celebrate the beauty and intricacies of nature and love of fantasy in a diverse body of multimedia endeavors, including, Turkish Marbled goods, hand-bound books, flower crowns, clay jewelry, dreamcatchers, and fairy wings.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I surround myself with artists and they are truly the most appreciative, aware and intelligent people I know. Spreading kindness and awareness of another way of living that is routed in being true to oneself and appreciating others and the earth is something I find artists love to take on. There will always be a need for inward reflection for all of us which I embrace within my paintings. Reflecting this intimate, yet universal journey through my art is something I will always strive to convey.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My website http://www.shadytreemaker.com/ is the best place to go to the Shady Tree Maker shop, view my portfolio, commission paintings/murals/Turkish Marbled clothes/personal lessons, and view my Vlog! I create a bi-weekly Vlog series, The Art of Making: A Teaching Vlog Series by Shady Tree Maker, to help guide makers of all kinds to finding their unique voice, teach professional practices, and skills in art making!
Shady Tree Maker on Instagram is also a great place to stay up to date with all things in my fine arts practice and Shady Tree Maker products! Engaging with art and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us would be the greatest way you can support yourself, if what I paint or create in my homemade goods helps you celebrate this genuine connection to yourself and the world then I encourage you to bring some of what I create into your life.
