Today we’d like to introduce you to Manu Miran.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I was born and raised in Venezuela and came to Boston to pursue grad school in 2012. After getting my masters in law, I wanted to find an output for my creative interests in music and contemporary art. I started deejaying local electronic music parties in 2014 and a year later partnered with my friend David Guerra to launch Darkroom (now A R E A), a series of pop-up photography exhibitions at alternative spaces, where I served as Music Curator and resident DJ. In 2016 I founded Visceral, an audiovisual dance night that takes the audience on a journey through the sensuous and daring sounds of techno and beyond.
Please tell us about your art.
Visceral is an underground platform that explores the audiovisual and experiential sides of electronic music by including mediums of expression that allow artists and creatives to work in instinctual, raw, spontaneous ways.
After Darkroom, I started exploring underground techno in queer spaces across the States and Europe where I reconnected with my creative self through dancing, which I grew up doing. I was inspired by the sense of community that existed in those spaces and their strong sense of identity and cultural construct.
As I became aware of the lack of diversity and representation attached to my identity -an immigrant, deaf latinx person of color-, I felt the need to create a space that would allow underrepresented talent the chance to connect at a deeper level, by intersecting dance music and visual art in a way that would appeal to primal reactions and create a social experience.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Supporting the local scene with genuine sincerity is a good way to connect with like-minded people.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Visceral events are scheduled every two to three months. You can follow up via Instagram, and Facebook (visceralbos). Although Resident Advisor and social media have been our biggest digital platforms to promote the events, word of mouth has proved to be essential to make new connections.
