Today we’d like to introduce you to Latayven Peevy-Moore.
Latayven, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up, I wanted to be many things. A fashion designer, nail tech, and the list goes on. I tried these things but it just didn’t work out for me. Then, my mom’s friend gave me some makeup for my 18th birthday. Before this gift, I’d only wear mascara, eyeliner, and some lip gloss. Makeup was never something I was really interested in but I gave it a try, ever since then, I fell in love and I encourage everyone to try something different that they never thought about because you really just might surprise yourself. With the gifts I got, I’d watch YouTube videos all day and night, on break at work, study hall during school, whenever I had the chance and WiFi, I was watching a YouTube tutorial. Watching these women transform and bringing out their inner beauty and seeing how makeup brought out confidence in them is what made me fall in love even more. I still didn’t think I’d be doing makeup for a living until I started practicing on others, seeing how I can change how a person feels and looks at themselves for the better. Although being a makeup artist is nothing I ever thought about I knew it was something I wanted to do forever. Having confidence is something that makeup gives me. It makes me feel like I can take on anything when I’m looking good and this is what I hope to achieve with each of my clients after every makeup session they book. I want them to go out feeling great and looking even better once they leave my chair.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have 2 pieces of advice. For starters buy drugstore products. You can get great deals and great products and use those to figure out what products you do and don’t like. Play with the drugstore makeup before you go and purchase hundreds of dollars in makeup products that you probably will never use. I recommend Bh cosmetics and Real Techniques for the beginner brushes. They are beginner friendly but will have you feeling like a pro! My last piece of advice is to not give up. Everyone at school tells me how I make it look so easy and little do they know that practically every day I’m still learning new things when it comes to makeup. If you take anything from what I’m saying, take this and don’t give up! Don’t be scared to ask someone if you can practice on them, The most they can do is say no and if they don’t like the outcome it’s perfectly fine. Your makeup doesn’t have to please everyone just take the advice and use it for the next face. I had entered a whole new world learning makeup. For me, it wasn’t easy but what I loved about it was I could make all the rules, I was teaching myself how to do this from scratch, At times, it felt like I was learning a second language. I’d stay up all night trying to get the perfect cut crease just to wash off my face in 10 minutes. I’d fall asleep watching YouTube videos and would wake up the next morning trying to create looks. What I hated was how the girls on YouTube made it look so easy and it was something that I couldn’t wait to do.
We’d love to hear more about Royaltay.Co.
As of now, I’m Enrolled at the Elizabeth Grady school of esthetics. I’m also a freelancing makeup artist in the Boston Community. Based off of reviews from my lovely clients I’d say I’m known for blending eyeshadows, the perfect brows, and glowing highlight. What sets me apart is soon I will be not only just a makeup artist but I will be adding facials, eyelash extensions/tints, and waxing to my services. What I am most proud of is makeup is something I taught myself and I am putting myself through an amazing school that will really help me chase after my dreams and expand my services. To me, it’s no longer just about the makeup. I want to be able to help my clients get rid of whatever they are trying to cover up with the makeup and be able to help them get rid of it permanently and not just temporarily. I mean what sounds better than having a makeup artist that has you look great with or without makeup.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor isn’t always easy but I’d say just gravitate to those who you feel like brings out the inner you. Not everyone is perfect but we all have those who we look up to. You’d just have to figure out who you admire and what it is about them that makes them and how they relate to you.
