Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Palone.
Leah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love affair with bringing people together started long before I even gave it much consideration as a career (think high school prom planning committee). I started on a path to law school while in college and (in between planning celebrations and coordinating buses to hockey games so we could have “fans” in the stands) quickly diverted from this path with the help and direction of an incredible mentor. I pivoted quickly and landed at the Boston Phoenix. With a willingness to get my hands on anything I could, I quickly took on more responsibility. From planning fashion week after parties to helping coordinate performances by Vampire Weekend to Courtney Love at unique venues like MFA, to après ski parties at some of the best skiing destinations in New England, I officially had the coolest job a 20-something could want and realized I knew what I wanted to do. A few years later I was recruited over to Boston magazine and spent my first few years establishing events as a revenue stream for the company and rebuilding a marketing team that could handle the changing landscape. Now, I wear many hats but feel lucky enough to spend most of my time doing what I love, working with clients to bring their brands to life and building relationships that help connect and advance organizations, all in a city I love.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If the road was smooth I would not be where I am now. The failures, fear, and challenges have themselves turned out to be my biggest learning moments.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Boston magazine celebrates Boston. We tell a story for our audience, so they can feel like they have an inside edge. What I love most is that we tell the story of the people and places that make us uniquely Boston.
Every day, I try to find opportunities to share with people all of our capabilities. We’re not only storytellers we’re also fixers. Our late founder D. Herbert Lipson not only reminded us to always stay curious, but he said it was our responsibility to ease the pain and increase the joy of living in our city by providing our audience with solutions, resources, and information. Not only for our audience, but also for our clients. We operate as a solutions-oriented marketing agency for many of our clients. We help solve their problems, connect them to the right people, in the right place, at the right time and do this through our various channels with the help of our incredibly talented team.
Like many organizations, our talent is our lifeblood. The roots of our brand run deep and strong but without the talented team behind our doors the heart stops pumping.
What many people do not realize about our organization is the amount of support we give back to our community. We’re trying to do a better job at telling this side of the story because it’s something we’re incredibly proud of and believe wholeheartedly that it is essential for us to support the community in which we live and help tell their story because it is crucial to the advancement of our city. Boston magazine has a unique opportunity to give back to those making a difference in our city. Through a mix of in-kind media, ticket donations, time and sponsorship dollars, we donate over $700k each year to various non-profits and local partners.
What were you like growing up?
I was a strong-willed kid. Always determined but also extremely critical of myself almost to a fault. I spent the majority of my youth as a competitive figure skater.
