Meet Saad Thabit of DRF Engineering Services in Metrowest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saad Thabit.

Saad, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today?
I was originally born in Iraq where I lived and studied at the University of Baghdad College of Engineering. My wife, 6-month-old daughter, and I left Iraq due to the increasingly unstable times and immigrated to the U.S., arriving on July 4th, 1995. Like many immigrants, I rose from low paying jobs like pumping gas and working in retail, into more traditional engineering jobs. After 20 years working for a variety of companies that specialized in renewable energy and alternative energy solutions, I decided to start my own consulting firm, DRF Engineering Services. From being specialized in power, to working with cutting edge technology such as commercial drones, 3D-Metal printing, electric assist bikes, and neutron detection solutions. DRF Engineering Services has continued to grow over the past three years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
From the moment we landed it has not been a smooth road. My years of experience working with and for a variety of companies has given the opportunity to cultivate a large network of individuals within the engineering field. This has been invaluable for the growth of DRF. When I founded DRF, I really had to examine my life, and rethink my family’s lifestyle. Being a small business owner comes with challenges, from finding your first customer to finding an office to conduct the business, business development, sales and marketing, networking, accounting …  everything.

Our office is located at the Entrepreneur Innovation Center(EIC) at Framingham State University, the EIC is a hybrid co-working/incubator space. The Center targets potential entrepreneurs and Framingham State University students who are building or plan to build their businesses in the MetroWest area. The Center provides startup entrepreneurs with the resources, time, and space to help turn their ideas into actual businesses in the shared work area, where members connect with each other, collaborate, and exchange ideas.
