Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda McGary.
Amanda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My Dose of Glam journey began when I was very little. Growing up, I was fascinated with my mother and grandmother’s makeup and loved creating outfits to wear. This love continued into high school where I started fashion blogging. I started blogging more so for myself where I used it as a creative outlet to express and capture my ideas. Eventually, I ended up getting my Cosmetology license and although I quickly learned that particular field isn’t for me, it did help me realize that I am very passionate about sharing any tips and advice I have learned along the way. That’s when I decided, rather than just sharing this information with my friends and family, maybe I could share my knowledge with others as well! My focus early on was more makeup related but I have been sharing more fashion recently. Being able to express myself through fashion and makeup has been a very important part of my life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It certainly hasn’t been a smooth road, there have been so many times I just want to give up because I’m not gaining as many followers as I’d like to or I’m not working with as many brands as I’d like. Tying in with that, the best advice I can give to women is to stop looking at the numbers and remind yourself why you are doing this in the first place. Success will come with time if you remain persistent and provide the best content you can. Obsessing over the negative isn’t going to get you where you want to so try to retrain your thoughts into a more positive approach and have fun with it!
What should we know about Dose of Glam? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Dose of Glam is a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog where I share everything from outfit ideas, tips, my favorite products and any advice I feel would benefit my readers. I aim to focus my content on more affordable and practical products that are geared towards the “everyday girl”. I believe you don’t always need to spend a crazy amount of money to get the look you want, whether that be with makeup or clothes.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I would say the biggest barrier to women is the constant comparing game and not wanting to help each other. The quote “other people’s success is not your failure” is a powerful message and should remind us to try to help others when possible. Helping other people to success says a lot about your character.
