Today we’d like to introduce you to Erica Mathews.
Erica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was in my early teens, I became fascinated with makeup. Being Asian in a largely white town was difficult. At the time, most makeup tutorials were in magazines and only featured white women. Then, Kevyn Aucoin came along and really spread the message of makeup enhancing diversity. That completely changed how I saw makeup and myself.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve learned that technical ability is only half of the game. Effectively marketing yourself, networking, and being good with clients is a huge piece of being successful. Working at a makeup counter taught me about what women are really looking for and how to push myself out of my shyness, not take rejection personally, etc.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Makeup by Erica Lynne – what should we know?
I invested more in classes than a product. I took several classes at Makeup For Ever and learned techniques from great educators like James Vincent and Orlando Santiago. I believe the makeup can’t fill in weak technical skill.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Don’t let fear stop you. So many makeup artists are afraid of a career without a straight trajectory. And don’t engage in the comparison game. Network with positive and supportive artists. Many don’t want to help but many do.
