Today we’d like to introduce you to James Barkley.
James, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve always had a fascination with taking photos, but it wasn’t until I took a trip to Japan that I realized my real passion for photography. I was in my element taking photos of cherry blossoms, the narrow streets, food and the locals. The response to my photos from family, friends and coworkers was very encouraging and made me think, hey, maybe I do have the eye for this. So I did some research, bought a decent camera and enrolled in a part time photography course in Melbourne to further develop my skills. It involved juggling both my full time job as an Art Director in advertising and night classes for 6 months. The course really helped me grasp the technical side of photography, as I’d always just shot on automatic modes. Learning how to shoot manual really opened up my world. Once I completed the course, I started to shoot more professionally. Doing event photography and portraits.
My career in advertising brought me over to the US. I’d always dreamed of living and working here. I’ve been able to make the most of my photography skills whilst living here, in both my advertising and photography projects. Since being here my photography work has been published in ESPN magazine, a billboard in Times Square and across the internet. And I’m just getting started.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Because I’m so passionate about photography, I never see any obstacles or challenges as a negative struggle. It’s all a learning experience that can only make me stronger. The biggest hurdle I would say is finding enough time to do my personal projects. But when there’s a will, there’s a way.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about James Barkley Photography – what should we know?
As a photographer, I’m known for shooting food, places and people. I would say this is my focus.
When it comes to food, I’m nearly as passionate about it as I am photography. I find great pleasure in cooking, styling and photographing food. Wholefoods used one of my photos on their digital platforms during thanksgiving. It was of a pumpkin pie that I baked, styled and photographed.
I think I’m happiest and most engaged as a photographer when I’m on an adventure traveling to a new place. Experiencing and capturing the northern lights in Iceland last year was a real highlight. My dream assignment would be to work with Condé Nast Traveler, exploring new places and capturing the adventures along the way. I’m looking at taking a trip to Morocco later this year.
I feel that photographing people is where I can express myself and convey a deeper story. I photograph people for commercial, wedding and events, lifestyle, fashion and portrait projects. One of my favorite things about photographing people is that I get to know the person and their story before I even pick up the camera. Photographing people also encourages me to jump outside of my comfort zone and pushes me creatively. Photojournalism is a new area for me that I’m starting to explore. I’m currently working on a new photo story and article, developed from interviews I conducted. I look forward to telling many more stories through my art.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would say my biggest supporters have been my family, friends and coworkers. They’re the ones who really gave me the confidence and encouragement to take photography more seriously.
