Art & Life with Andy Drachman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Drachman.

Andy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.

I’ve always had an interest in filmmaking and movies. I told everyone I wanted to be a director when I was 13. Since graduating college in 2011, I’ve been working with an awesome production team that took me under their wing as intern. Initially I was just working as an extra editor / b-cam operator but I realized that I enjoyed shooting and working with cameras a lot more.

Fast forward 6 years and I’m the head of production at Animus Studios. I spend most of my time on set, shooting high-end content for a range of clients. Ultimately I’d like to spend more time working on documentary and narrative projects as I love telling stories that focus on powerful, compelling people.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
A lot of the work that I do is “documentary style”. Meaning that I’m not filming actors or actresses in a designed set, I’m filming genuine people in their natural environment. I like to think that my approach to filming allows our subject to feel comfortable and just be themselves uninhibited. I’ve been on productions where people develop a self-awareness and become self-conscious with what they are doing and saying and that makes it difficult for the filmmaker to capture what they need to tell the story. When I’m filming people my goal is to be able to show them as they truly are.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
There is a lot of talented people out there. I think the biggest challenge for filmmakers and artists in general is making something that truly stands out. One of the best ways (I can think of at least) to stand out is to find a really powerful story and tell it to the best of one’s ability.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
