Today we’d like to introduce you to Chickie Celli.
Chickie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Claychick was birthed as a small classroom in my home many years ago (almost 20)!! It started as a hobby for me when my sweet husband bought me my first kiln and kick wheel he found on Craig’s list. It grew to be an actual business when some of my neighbors and friends wanted to paint pottery and create clay keepsakes with me using a potter’s wheel. It all began very organically with me going into people’s homes to host parties. I also visited many nursing homes and day cares, I love that the art we create is really for all ages and abilities!! After many years teaching in my home I decided to open a brick and mortar pottery shop in the waterfront area of Plymouth in 2010, I quickly out grew 600 sq. ft. and now reside in a great little industrial park, Camelot Park in Plymouth off exit #5.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have faced many struggles along the way…my first brick and mortar location did not have water or a kiln on site and I had to share the bathroom and parking. It truly was a ton of work to grow this business and be able to move it to a better location that suits my needs as well as the artist’s needs. I have had to create programs and curriculum to accommodate a variety of different groups of people. I do not have a business background so I take advantage and am grateful for the shared wisdom from the other business I have become friends with. Other small business owners have been incredibly helpful to me as well as my local chamber of commerce. I could not do this without the support!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is primarily a paint your own pottery shop that also offers many other art mediums such as pottery wheel lessons, glass fusing, canvas painting board art and whatever else we want to make! I am the pottery wheel instructor and love to play in the clay the most. I love teaching kids and artists of all ages that they can take a lump of clay and create something fun or functional with it from ideas straight out of their imaginations! We are known for being a great place for families to create and make memories together. We have won several wicked Local awards and have been voted many times for best place to host a party or take a class! I am very proud of the things we support in our community; we love to give back and are involved in many worthy causes in Plymouth such as “Empty Bowls”.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Plymouth is a wonderful place to have a business. I have a very unique business and the only paint your own pottery shop in town. I would recommend Plymouth as a place to start a business. Many friends and neighbors in Plymouth take great pride in shopping local. We have a wonderful SCORE program that is free for anybody who is interested in starting a business and would like a mentor. It is available through our Plymouth area chamber of commerce.
