Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Bouchard.
Maggie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for creating. After I graduated high school, I started at Bridgewater State University as a biology major. After a few weeks of intensive labs, I realized I had much more passion for my art101 classes. I marched right on over to the big ol’ building on the quad, switched my major to Art with a sculpture concentration and never looked back!
I enjoyed those four years in my art classes so much, but even though I loved sculpture and painting I never really felt like that was the medium I was meant to work with. I tried so many different mediums from photography to weaving, loved them all, but still I felt like I hadn’t found it yet.
After graduating, I worked in an art gallery in Providence Rhode Island on Atwells Ave for about 3 years, as well as with other artists as a personal assistant. Let me tell you, I was working hard, but the money really wasn’t there. I had always thought of becoming a hairstylist, because I loved playing with hair and my mom was one when I was little. I loved the energy of the salons and the thought of making other people feel beautiful seemed great.
One day, I decided to just enroll in hair school and see how it went! Quickly, I learned that this was the medium that I was missing, and I haven’t looked back since. I love creating specific styles and looks that are unique to every client. I loved making people happy even more. I’m on my feet, busy and working with my hands and I could never imagine anything else, even on my hardest day!
Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but that makes all the successes more rewarding! This job and industry has revealed some personal weaknesses that I’ve had to work through as well as some strengths I never knew I had. Switching salons is never an easy thing, but sometimes you have to think of what’s best for you and your career in the long run. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some very talented stylists and I’ve been able to take some amazing classes to better my abilities.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I work at Amore Hair Design in Foxboro, Ma for my mentor and best friend Alysha Cornetta. We have a cozy and laid back environment where we strive to make every client, new or old, feel excited to be there and comfortable.
I feel as though I am known for/specialize in balayage and vivid colors. I’ve taken many classes for these color techniques and I feel as though my clientele is starting to build around these services, which is really exciting!
I feel as though we are most proud of the service we provide for our clientele. I try not to double book my clients to ensure that they are getting 100% of my attention throughout their whole appointment, and I feel as though it is appreciated. As far as what sets me apart, I feel as though my art background has given me the knowledge and confidence to step outside the box for my clients. I always try to keep their look fresh, new and catered to them.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do feel like the Boston area is fantastic for a new stylist because I am a new stylist! I’ve only been in the industry for 3 years and being in this area has made it so easy to access great education and salons.
