Meet Sudarshan Sundar of Inner Space Meditation Center and Gallery in Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sudarshan Sundar.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About 16 years ago, in 2001, I was exposed to the Raja Yoga philosophy by a colleague of mine. Just one session brought a lot of positive changes to my life: in how I saw myself, how I started seeing the strengths in others rather their weaknesses (e.g. in my intra-mural Cricket team), how I saw or approached situations. I then decided to give the mediation a try. I am generally NOT the person who would sit still :-), and also I have heard many inspirational talks and tried various different forms of yoga and meditation.

As I learned more and went in deeper into Raja Yoga, I found my purpose in life (questions like “how can I experience lasting peace and happiness?”, “is there more to life than just the day to day?”), had a clear aim for myself in my spiritual progress. After this, I always dreamed that one day I could open an exhibition or meditation center that would help outreach the very unique knowledge I’d come in touch with.

It has been a long journey since then because it is non-trivial for a bunch of factors to align (the people, location, resources, blessings from the organizational leaders etc. etc.). Eventually in September 22, 2012, incidentally, International Day of Peace, all things did line-up and with the help of a whole group of volunteers at the Brahma Kumaris Learning Center for Peace in Watertown, “Inner Space Meditation Center and Gallery” was born after over a month of preparations and hard work by many involved to make it happen! Inspiration for this was also from a few “Inner Space” centers opened by the sister organization in the UK. (See http://innerspace.org.uk for details)

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most of the key volunteers/managers have our own full-time jobs. I am a full-time Software Engineer by profession. So having constant focus on Inner Space’s “live” [daily] service we are providing to the community is non-trivial. This means a lot of sacrifice of our personal time.

We provide our services FREE of charge as a service to the community. It has been one of the principle since the beginning that this knowledge and meditation is invaluable and there is no price to pay for this.

By no means any of us volunteers were professional marketers so forming a professional strategy like a “business” has been tough.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for?
We teach how one can hold an awareness of the true self and one’s original positive qualities while in meditation and in real life interactions. We teach a practical form of spirituality which is easy to practice by changing the mindset through which we approach people and situations. When my awareness changes, then my vision, speech, action changes. Then eventually the world changes for the better.

What are you most proud of as a company?
We believe that this work is inspired by the Divine Light – Shiv Baba – The Seed, Benefactor, and the Incorporeal Blissful being of Light, We believe that all human souls belong as one family to the seed of the tree, so we are one global family.

What sets you apart from others?
We offer our service FREE of charge as a service to the community! We offer a Universal form of meditation on light that applies to a person of any race, gender, nationality, or religion

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Deep love for the vision, dedication, honesty, humility, and bliss plays a more significant role than luck in my opinion 🙂 Put another way, if you have the above qualities then you get lucky. The situations will work out and the right people will be attracted to help, to make one lucky — this has been my experience.
