Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Taves.
Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started selling real estate in Charlestown back in 1993. I always had an interest in real estate as my family members (my mother, father, grandfather and sister) were all active agents at different times of their lives. I joined a small real estate company in Charlestown and had a blast! We spent a lot of our time working together in an office back then (this is before MLS, cell phones or email!) I learned a tremendous amount about sales and brokerage from this experience. I sold for that firm for 12 years. I relocated with my family to Lexington in 2004 and moved on to a larger, national firm for the next 6 years. I had the opportunity to learn the suburbs during this time and enjoyed suburban real estate but missed the fluidity of the city marketplace. I returned to city real estate in 2010 and took a job downtown in a newly opened office on the Rose Kennedy Greenway. I now was armed with suburban knowledge and continued to sell the burbs while re focusing on the city neighborhoods (Downtown, Charlestown, North End/Waterfront, Seaport, Southern End, etc.). Many folks (young families) were trying to move from the city to the burbs and from the burbs to the city (empty nesters). I found a niche. I was comfortable in most any 128 belt suburb and knew the city like the back of my hand. I could help on both sides.
I left that firm and launched Preferred Residential Properties in February of 2017!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The Great Recession and Global Banking crisis in 2008-2009 was challenging. People could not get financing easily and everything was for sale. Buyers were scarce. We did FHA deals because that was really the only way folks could get financing unless they paid cash. Sales were slim. There was not a lot of cash out there. It was a time that we knew would pass but painful for our sellers who could not sell and for buyers who were unable to secure a loan commitment.
In 2010, things started to improve and by 2012, we were off and going again.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Preferred Residential Properties – what should we know?
We are a small boutique firm offering an exceptional level of personalized customer service, professionalism and expertise. We go to any lengths for our clients! We handle all price ranges in all city neighborhoods and surrounding towns/suburbs. We take pride in our business and handle each listing and client with the utmost care.
Depending on the property – sometimes we need to make some upgrades to the listing. For example – I am listing a property in the North End next week and it had been rented for many years. The seller agreed to getting it cleaned up so we could maximize the sales price. I currently have my contractors working there to paint the entire place, replace light fixtures, sand and stain the floors and replace the carpet. My stager will go in last and then it will be ready for the photography. The presentation of a listing is incredibly important to us. I am a perfectionist. When we launch a property to market, it sparkles. Our mission is to cast the largest net possible and attract as many buyers as we can. The media is the most important sales tool we have.
I continue to move folks from the city to the burbs and vice versa while selling all neighborhoods in Boston. I have recently sold homes in: Charlestown, Winchester, South Boston, North End, Back Bay, Lexington, Concord, Sudbury, Southborough, Malden, Arlington, West Bridgewater, Cambridge, Everett, Somerville, etc.
I am most proud of the dedication and commitment to my customers. I am driven to help them reach all of their real estate goals both Boston and beyond. I have a deep love for the business and operate with the highest level of honesty and transparency. I promise a seamless process and have a proven track record of success. It is all a lot of fun too! I love what I do…it continues to evolve as buyers and sellers’ needs change…I would not want to be doing anything else! The tag line for Preferred Residential Properties is Enthusiasm, Integrity, Results and that is what we deliver!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I learned a lot in my first real estate job back in 1993. Working in an office (PRE MLS, PRE Voice Mail or Email) with 5 other full time agents afforded me the exposure and experience one cannot get today. I was lucky.
My father has helped me tremendously over the years. He is a CPA and a real estate broker and was always working on a commercial deal! He is a brilliant man and I have learned so much from him.
My friend and fellow real estate associate Albert Rocheteau helped me launch my company and spent countless hours working on the Preferred Residential web site: (www.PreferredResidential.com). I could not have done it without him.
Diane Houghton is my web master and marketing guru. She was instrumental in the launching of the company and continues to wow me in her daily maintenance of our sites, social marketing knowledge and expertise.
I will be forever grateful to all too them for their help and encouragement.
