Today we’d like to introduce you to Maura Spencer.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Maura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Immediately after graduating high school at seventeen I started hair school in a not so glam area of Massachusetts. I was extremely lucky to have found my passion at a young age. I began working in a boutique salon out in western Mass. Receiving hands on training with a tight knit crew was essential for starting my career. I was the owner’s personal color assistant for two years, afterwards I was promoted to taking my own clients. I am forever grateful for the foundation of knowledge I received there. I knew I loved what I was doing, but I decided it was time for a change of scenery. I knew I would have to start from the bottom again if I moved to Boston, but I knew in the long run it would be worth it. I took a job at Beaucage Salon, packed my bags, and headed to the big city.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most certainly has not been a smooth road. I had to convince my parents to allow me to go to hair school instead of a traditional college. Being a successful hair stylist is not a given. You have to be driven, seek a lot of education, and have type of personality that has the ability to connect with your clients. Many people very not supportive of my career choice. Taking a job in a large existing salon in an urban area has had its challenges. Several of coworkers have been employed at my salon for decades. To succeed in this environment a stylist has to be willing to work hard at building a clientele, and have self-confidence.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Beaucage Salon – what should we know?
What I love about my job is I get to do a bit of everything. Everyday has variety. I truly enjoy getting to know my clients. They are amazing, inspiring people. I have extensive training in hair color. I can confidently say there’s nothing I can’t tackle when it comes to hair coloring. A large portion of my clientele are blondes. I also do a bridal and editorial styling. I love having the opportunity to see my work professionally photographed.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
