Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Torosian.
Michael, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 2002, I started as a volunteer at HOP-TV, which was the Community Access station before HCAM came to existence. I learned basic camera and control room operations. I stayed on in 2004, when HCAM was formed, as a volunteer. After a year, HCAM was growing and a position for a part time production assistant opened up. I figured I was volunteering 20 hours a week, maybe I could get paid for it. In 2008, Station Manager Jim Cozzens saw my passion for community television as well as my work ethic and made me an offer too good to be true and I became full time giving up my 23 year construction career to become HCAM’s Production Coordinator.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I had plenty of challenges along the way. I was a divorced father of 3 children and wanted to stay close to them so I could see and be with them as often as possible. I coached their soccer, football, baseball and softball teams which gave me excuse to get out of work early to be with them.
I am also a call firefighter for Hopkinton and volunteering is a huge part of my life.
Our town grew fast and it became expensive to live here. I was fortunate to take a second full-time position as a dispatcher for the Ashland Fire Department. I work over 80 hours a week constantly juggling schedules around to complete all my tasks and maintain a nice life for my children. Now that my kids are grown, done with school and in the work force, I continue to do both jobs because I love what I do. When you love what you do for a living, it doesn’t feel like work at all.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with HCAM Television – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Hopkinton Community Access and Media (HCAM) is a 501c3 non-profit that was formed by the Hopkinton Selectmen in 2014. Our mission is to inform, educate and entertain our community.
Our television coverage of Government Meetings, Sporting and local events are some of the best around. We are a full HD television station.
My job as a Production Coordinator is to make sure that equipment and studio space is scheduled and ready to go. To organize the volunteer crew and give them assignments.
To help, teach and support volunteer crew and producers make the show that they want and to operate the equipment in the studios and out on location.
I am so proud of our volunteers who dedicate hundreds of hours each year to connect our community.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My future plans for HCAM is to continue to grow to meet the needs of our residents and to continue to make the best television for Hopkinton.
