Art & Life with Becca Moot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca Moot.

Becca, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always loved photography but I really got into it after I suffered from a pretty severe head injury that knocked me out of high school for two years. I had a really bad memory then so I relied on pictures to fill in the gaps. I was always so frustrated with my photos because they couldn’t quite capture the personality of someone I loved or beauty of a place or moment so I really focused on getting better at that, which is why my work reflects really natural candid moments now. As I recovered from my head injury I started loving photography more and more. Throughout college I always did photography as a hobby, but never thought I could realistically become a photographer. I’m super practical and I always thought my future would entail being a doctor, or working at a nonprofit, or something else 9-5 with a stable salary.

I struggled settling on a major and a career path because I loved what I was learning in school and I had great experience with internships but nothing really sparked my passion like photography did. Everything felt like work and I didn’t want to live my life waiting to go home from work just to return the next day. It took me a really long time to actually gain confidence in my abilities as a photographer but eventually the summer before senior year I had some really great people in my life that were extremely supported and gave me the push I needed to go for it. I officially launched my business at the beginning of March and it has been the most fulfilling and exciting time of my life! I’m graduating from Boston University in 2 weeks and I’m so happy I have settled on photography and am able to continue to grow my business once I graduate.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m a photographer and although I’ll take pictures of anything, I specialize in portraits, couples, and travel. I love photographing people because I get to be involved in some of the happiest moments of people’s lives: graduations, engagements, weddings, family milestones, etc. and it is just the best thing in the world. Being able to capture people’s joy and giving them a photograph that reflects that is so fulfilling. I also love showing people how beautiful they are. People can get really self-conscious when they’re getting their picture taken and I just like to be able to encourage them and help show them how incredible they look and are. I love travel photography because I find the world to be such a beautiful place and I love to be able to show people different cultures and lifestyles. I think the world does a little better when people understand each other and I think photography can play at least a little role in that, which I love to be a part of.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
First of all I think it’s the coolest thing ever being called an artist because I never had a ton of confidence that I’d make it to this point with photography so thank you for including that in your question!! Anyways, I definitely define my success by my happiness. Yes, if I did not earn enough money to make ends meet, I would just be stressed out of my mind so my income does play somewhat of a role. But other than that, I have a job that allows me to meet tons of incredible people, be outside all the time, be my own boss, and work at home with my two dogs/best friends, so I’m extremely happy which makes me feel pretty darn successful. Another thing that really goes into both my success and my happiness is my pride. I hold myself to a really high standard so if I’m not producing work I’m proud of then I don’t feel successful or happy, no matter if other people love it or not. I think being proud of your work is so largely important for artists to feel successful. I know success can be measured in a million different days but at the end of the day I’m so happy with how I get to spend my life and that feels like success to me.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
People can see my work online on my website beccamootphotography.com or through my Instagram @beccamootphotography. If anyone feels inclined to support me they can book a shoot with me!!! Or if they like my travel photography they can order prints which would honestly be the coolest thing ever. If someone emailed me that I would have to call my mom, run around with my dogs, have a 5-minute dance party, and then I’d be settled down enough to respond. That’s honestly how I react when anyone books a shoot with me though!
