Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Roach.
Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a passion for health and preventative medicine. Becoming a parent opened up my eyes to all the decisions we need to make to optimize our heath. Our food, skincare, cleaning products and even the paint in our home all play a key role in how our body functions. All of these choices can seem overwhelming, so I decided to share my experiences in a blog format nine years ago. I started cooking with organic, whole foods and started meal planning. Dinner was no longer a stressful time, even after the daycare dash at the end of the day!
Friends and family started asking for more advice about healthy eating, which led me to go back to school. I attended the Academy of Culinary Nutrition, which was eye-opening. Many of the mainstream ideas I had about health were misguided. The education I received allowed me to learn new culinary skills, introduce new ingredients to my kitchen (like seaweed!) and develop meal plans to help women optimize their health. Now, I work with women one-on-one to coach them through a modern lifestyle design to help them feel their best self.
I’ve come a long way from an autoimmune diagnosis as a child, an eating disorder in my teens, and total burnout as a busy mom with three kids living in a foreign country just a few years ago. I knew there was a better way of living and I was so happy to find solace in cooking nourishing food for myself and my family.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When you are getting started in your career, I think you need to be open to the possibilities ahead. You can’t know exactly where you are going to be in five or ten years from now. The world is changing and the job you may want later may not even exist today. Find something you enjoy, and allow new ideas to come to you.
There is incredible flexibility in the job world today, but you have to be motivated. My mentor reminded me to “do the work.” You need to put yourself out there and do the work. It will make you better, and also let you learn what you love to do the most.
We’d love to hear more about Emily Roach Wellness.
My goal is to provide solutions for busy women looking to feel energetic and nourished. I find a holistic wellness approach is helpful to look at the root cause of why women might have low energy, poor sleep or digestive issues. I think that’s missing when we look at the current model of health care. It’s great at dealing with acute care, but chronic issues don’t get the attention they deserve. Instead of prescribing a medication for a symptom, I look at why the issue is there in the first place.
Women join me at my culinary nutrition classes and wellness workshops to learn how to cook better food at home. I teach them how to read nutrition labels and learn how sugar is hiding in so many things! I offer group coaching programs with meal plans that allow women to see how they feel eating gluten-free and dairy-free. Many women hear that it’s a good thing to eat an anti-inflammatory diet, but they don’t know how that translates to cooking for their family. I have a family of five to cook for so I get it. Time is tight, but there are shortcuts and simple solutions to cooking at home without stressing out.
There are always new opportunities in the health and wellness field. I’ve decided to partner with Scout & Cellar wines so I can offer my clients a better choice when it comes to their weekend cocktails. Sometimes it’s the simple swaps that start women on a path to more positive change in their health.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
My advice for women starting their career is to do the work. Bring your own ideas to the table, speak your mind, and take care of your health. Be the bright shiny star that lights up a room with your positive energy. It’s hard to do that if you are loading yourself up on caffeine every morning. That’s borrowed energy. Learn how to nourish yourself so you can do your best work and be known for it.
