Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Erwin.
Anna, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
It’s been an unexpected journey, but I’m more certain than ever that I’m doing what I’m meant to do. Just about a year ago, I graduated from the University of Rochester in Upstate NY with the intention of pursuing a career in the medical field.
For as long as I can remember, the plan for me was go to a prestigious university, get straight As and get a stable job in healthcare. I’ve always had a creative side and a need for self expression, but I think this was stifled by the idea that I needed to follow a traditional route and do what everyone else was doing to be successful.
After graduating, I panicked – not knowing what I wanted to do or where to go from there. Something in me was telling me that medicine wasn’t for me, and so last spring I withdrew my applications from graduate schools and set out to forge a different path for myself than the one I had been on for so long.
Fast forward a year later and here I am, working for a marketing agency during the day and pursuing a deep-rooted passion for photography at every chance I get. I never set out to be a photographer – it’s something that found me. I think my love of photography stems from a passion for stories – one of my favorite things to do is get lost in a good book or write short stories and poetry of my own. I’m enamored by human connection + the stories that make people who they are and I find so much joy in storytelling through photography.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
As primarily an engagement + wedding/elopement photographer, my goal is to create images that capture authentic love and emotion. To me, photography isn’t about the perfectly posed or stiff – it’s about capturing the moments that really make you feel something and I strive to do that with each and every photograph. I find inspiration everywhere – from the people I meet to the places I go, I am constantly growing and pushing myself as an artist so that I can better serve my clients and give them the absolute best experience.
It’s seriously the most amazing job in the world and I feel so lucky that so many couples trust me to tell their love story through my work. It’s such an honor!
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My biggest piece of advice for other artists is to pursue your passion fully and believe that you can do anything you set your mind to with your art, no matter what obstacles are in your way.
Invest in yourself and your dream and put in the work, the time, and the energy to make it happen. Right now, I’m juggling a full-time job 40 hours per week and typically spend at least 25-30 hours a week on top of that building my photography business – between shooting, editing, marketing, working on my website, and communicating with my clients. Balancing everything on my plate can be so exhausting at times, but I’ve never been happier or more fulfilled. I doubted myself for so long and my only regret is that I wish I had started my business sooner!
Putting your art out in to the world and being vulnerable can be so scary but I promise – it’s SO worth it.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
