Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hinchey.
Sarah, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My entire life, I’ve been a creative in some capacity – whether through performing or visual arts. I believe that when you’re an artist you can express that side of yourself through many different mediums. It was always my dream to be an entrepreneur and even though I didn’t know exactly what that would look like, I did know that it would be in a creative field.
Ten years ago, while I was working in marketing, I became inspired by all of the visual content I was seeing on blogs and social media. I decided I wanted to learn how to make beautiful portraits and open a studio, so I went back to school to earn a certificate in digital imagery. While I was enrolled in the program, my son came along and I quickly found that I couldn’t juggle the demands of school and starting a business, along with pregnancy and caring for a newborn. I left school and decided instead to focus on my baby.
Carl Jung has a quote “Nothing has a stronger influence psychologically on the environment and especially on their children than the un-lived life of the parent.” So, I slowly chipped away at achieving my goal. Every time my son went down for a nap, I watched business and photography tutorials online. When he was awake, I practiced with him as my subject. I attended every workshop and class I could. And, as my friends became pregnant and had children, I was there with my camera learning and practicing.
Years later, when my son started school, I knew I was ready. I had built a portfolio that was a true representation of the work I wanted to create and I had the time to devote to providing an amazing experience for my clients. I took a leap!
I’ve been a full-time photographer for five years now and one of the things I love most is that I’m still able to continually learn, experiment, and evolve as an artist. It hasn’t always been an easy journey, but it makes me incredibly proud to know that my son has watched me learn this craft and build this thriving studio because I remained passionately committed to realizing my dream.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am inspired and motivated by “love.” When someone hires me to make a portrait, it’s because they want to document that person exactly as they are now, for all time. It is someone they love. It may be a portrait of themselves because they’re at a stage in their life when they’re feeling especially confident, and they want to celebrate that. Perhaps, they want to document their beautiful pregnancy, and the love they have for their newest arrival. It could be their grown children who are about to go off to college, their spouse, their parents. My passion is to create work that honors and celebrates the love of my subjects.
Every session I photograph is entirely custom and personal to the person I’m capturing. Whether they’re red lipstick bold, classic to the core or a bohemian romantic at heart, I always work to make sure their personal style shines through in their portraits. Wardrobe styling, hair, and makeup are included (for the adults) in every session, so it truly is an experience for them to relax, enjoy, and have every detail attentively cared for.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
