Today we’d like to introduce you to Antonia Larrain Eyzaguirre.
Antonia, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am 31 years old and I am from Chile. Everything started in 2014 when my mother and I were visiting a nursing home. There was an old lady with talented hands knitting little wonderful pieces. In order to help her so she could make a profit and with the idea of starting a new business, I asked her if she could knit some baby vests for me. She knitted about 12 vests and I sold them all. Some time later, the nursing home closed. This opened my eyes and I decided to look for knitters that I could help by giving them work and I redesigned an old model of vest that is characterized by its comfort and by being easy to put on and take off. A classic model in Chile with hat and back closure. This is the only model that is made in lamm, varying materials, colors and stitches.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I created ¨lamm¨, a brand of children’s sweaters made 100% by hand with love and dedication by a group of talented woman weavers. I offer a personalized service were the client chooses the material, color, size (sizes range from newborn to 4 years) and model and deliver a unique, durable and handmade piece to keep warm their little ones. My purpose is that moms take home a piece of our love through a practical and useful object for their children.
My inspiration are all those grandmothers that join knitting for their grandchildren, all woman that put a little of theirselves in each piece of art they do, all the people who enjoy and appreciate whatever is made by hand.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I believe that what has been done by hand lately has acquired the value it deserves and people chooses it for their quality, dedication and exclusiveness. Therefore, should be easier for handmade workers the access to platforms that encourage manual work.
