Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Messmer-Blust.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
A classically trained cell biologist during the day, I have a passion for photography in my spare time. I got my first DSLR in 2011, right before a trip to Australia, my first (ever) outside of North America. I became captivated with the idea of traveling the world and capturing these memories through my camera lens.
After experiencing multiple devastating pregnancy losses, I realized that taking photography more seriously could help me ease my heartache. I needed to literally see the world through a different lens. And, as I honed my craft, I became pregnant with our rainbow baby, Lucy. My daughter has been a great gift and solidifies to me that our lives are about making and capturing memories.
Please tell us about your art.
Photography is my passion; specifically long exposures, mostly at night. I enjoy capturing cityscapes (particularly Boston!), wildlife and more recently, astrophotography. The world at night is an amazingly magical place. What is particularly interesting is that many people do not realize that once the sun sets, the world around us takes on the most vibrant colors and in the darkest of night, a camera can pick up colors that your eyes cannot see.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I joined instagram one year ago and started following some of the major accounts in the Boston area. There are so many events and photography meet-ups in the area. I’ve met so many wonderful, like-minded friends this past year in the Boston photography community and I am so grateful for that!
