Life and Work with Jennifer Duong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Duong.

Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was brought into the family business at a young age. By the age of 4, I was already learning the trade. I worked weekends as a nail technician throughout high school and college. Once I graduated college, I started to work full time for my family business.

Has it been a smooth road?
Some of the struggles were building a clientele from scratch. We were in a new city, new faces, new trends, and we had to keep up. My advice would be, don’t be afraid to try new things. Be consistent and don’t hesitate to step out of your comfort zone.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Boston’s Nails & Spa – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in nails and body waxing. We are most proud of our expertise and cleanliness. I believe what sets us apart from our competitors is our willingness to take on any request. Our clients would come in with some sort of nail inspiration and we would try our best to achieve it.

There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
Luckily I was brought into the nail industry by my parents. They’re both experienced and skilled nail technicians so I learned from them. My advice is, find someone’s work that you look up to, and study their work. In my spare time, I am always learning. I would go to Instagram and follow other nail artists’ work and study them. Then, I’ll try my best to execute their techniques on my coworkers, then eventually onto my clients.
