Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Stanton Lee.
Kendra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started a blog in 2002, at really the dawn of the blogosphere (when they functioned more like online diaries). I needed a space to document my thoughts, my life. Since that time more than 15 years ago, I’ve enjoyed being a part of the online content landscape, earning my master’s in journalism, teaching media and writing at the university level and now, working full-time with clients to optimize their online content. I call my copywriting firm “Kendraspondence” because it’s like the love letters and other correspondence I get to write all day for a living. I think that thrill of seeing your name in print or seeing your content resonate with people never really goes away.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say if you are hungry to learn and are persuaded to believe “everything is figure-outtable” in the era of Google, you can absolutely run your own business, particularly in media.
Please tell us about Kendraspondence copywriting.
Kendraspondence is my copywriting firm and I work from my home in Milton. Because no one should stare at a computer all day, I do some calligraphy on the side which gives me so much joy! So, I’m basically fumbling with words all day, whether typed or hand-lettered. It’s a great life because I get to do what I love for a living while being able to pick up my kids from school and meet my hubby for lunch sometimes.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
I write a good deal of humor pieces, whether on my blog or for other publications. I have to thank my third-grade teacher, Mrs. Diehl, for celebrating my quirky sense of humor as a young girl. I was an annoying kid, always trying to perform and be the center of attention and she showed me how to channel this into my writing. She encouraged me to write often and in a voice that came naturally to me. I cannot thank my elementary school teachers enough–all they did was breath belief into me.
