Meet Tamara Flanagan of Tamara Flanagan Photography in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Flanagan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Like many high school students, I got cold feet when it came to choosing a major/college leading up to graduation day. I knew I wanted to do something with photography but instead decided to follow another passion at the time, fashion merchandising. It wasn’t until halfway through that first semester at college that I had realized I made a mistake. Photography was my real passion. And so I enrolled closer to home at Bridgewater State University.

Sophomore year passed, junior year passed, and I was loving my teachers and my major. Me being a planner, I now was trying to figure out what kind of photography to focus on. I decided to head more in the editorial route and interned with Edible South Shore, South Shore Living Magazine, and The Improper Bostonian shooting food for new and upcoming restaurants.

While photographing various restaurants throughout the Greater Boston area, I discovered I also loved shooting interiors. And so my journey through the interior design and architecture world began. Since then, my focus has primarily been working with designers, builders, and architects, however, I still collaborate with small food start-up companies as well.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! A lot of sweat and tears have come along the way. I’m in an industry where you cannot sit back and wait for projects/clients to come to you. To be in this industry you need to be self-motivated and driven. The hardest part was definitely finding the clients once graduation day came.

Reaching out to prospective clients in the area via email is something I did in the beginning and still, do to this day. Once I obtained a group of clients it was mostly networking from there. Upon entering my 4th year as a sole proprietor, I found that everyone knows each other in Boston, which is such a great way to network. They say it takes 5 years to build a small business and to truly feel like you’ve made it. This being my fourth year I couldn’t agree more. I am finally seeing consistent work and surround myself with a group of wonderful clients.

Please tell us about Tamara Flanagan Photography.
I specialize in food, interiors and product photography throughout the Greater Boston area. I love collaborating with my clients to achieve something we love. Seeing how much they enjoy the photos is a great feeling. That’s what makes me proud!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I’m not sure I would have changed anything. I’m glad I went to another college and realized my true passion. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I didn’t do that. Life is about self-discovery and learning along the way no matter how hard things may seem at the time.
