Meet Marti Epstein, Composer in Cambridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marti Epstein.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Marti. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started playing piano at age 4 and clarinet at age 10, and I knew that I wanted to be a musician when I “grew up.” But when I was in high school, my music teacher, Dr. Steve Lawrence, suggested that, because I was both good at music theory and creative, I try composing. I started studying with Dr. Robert Beadell at the University of Nebraska, and then when I graduated from high school, I went on to study composition and piano in college and then to graduate school. I earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in composition in 1989 from Boston University and started teaching at Berklee College of Music in 1991 (where I am still teaching!). Gradually, my music started to be performed, first locally and then all over the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For a composer of avant-garde post-classical concert music, it can’t possibly ever be a smooth road- but to be an artist, I believe that one should never have a completely smooth road. It’s always interesting!

Marti Epstein, composer – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a composer of avant-garde post classical concert music. I compose music on commission, but only if a project is interesting to me. I am set apart from other composers- as we all are- because I have my own unique individual voice.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My success as a composer is defined by consistently writing the best, most artistically rich music I can, coupled with engendering interest from performers who will champion it and perform it.
