Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Arena.
Justin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started booking house shows and playing music in late 2013 with a friend of mine Brian Huntress, This began our search for other like-minded musicians and allowed us to start working on our own art! As I dove deeper into the DIY Community and started to play other house venues around Massachusetts I started to become more interested in booking touring bands and cultivating a community that would support that ethic and DIY spirit on the south shore. I am now a full time Creative!
Has it been a smooth road?
A lot of the people who have had any authority over me have been very unsupportive of my transition into a full time freelance creative life. However the people who have been supportive have been incredibly so, without the people I love I would not be doing any of this. I’ve struggled with financial instability constantly and with Depression, anxiety and other cognitive hurdles such as Autism. It gets better I promise, just hold onto hope!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’ve been playing under the name “The Justin Arena Project” with bands and Solo for a few years now, however we have a stable set of members now and in the near future we are changing the name of the band so in turn I’m going to be separating my solo work and the band a little more!
My work aside from my songwriting includes running a revolving door DIY Record Label out of Rockland called “Together Records” and Painting/Wax Working under the Moniker “Ladyslipper Art”. I run Together Records with Cameron Francisco and We Book Local Art & Music Festivals, Showcases and National Tours. We also offer Screen printing services, Distro Services and promote local art and music for free on our bandcamp! We offer Recording mixing and Mastering through a resident studio and a photography/ videography studio as well! We intend on doing even more in the future!!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is a great place to experience artistic culture! It’s great a place because nobody takes any nonsense but at the same time every kinda demands nonsense! A city full of screaming baby’s driving cars and slapping paint everywhere, somewhere you’ve gotta spend a month in or so to really feel it out.
