Meet Amber Ma of Amber Ma Illustration in New York

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Ma.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I originally from Tianjin, China. When I was a child, my playground normally was in the hospital because my mother and my grandmother worked there. They gave me a box of chalk to draw and play on the blackboard and ground. But after they found out I often drew everywhere, they decided to give me enough paper to create.

But I think because of this experience, my mother found out my ability or talent (maybe) at that time. When I was growing up, she really respected my weird imagination and storytelling. She also encouraged me to research different things and gave me lots of chance to know art.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Studying art, for me, is not a smooth road.

Part of struggles is from my father. He doesn’t accept art and can’t understand art all the time. We have arguments lots of time but I transfer the negative emotion to my drawing and painting. How to use art to speak out/ how to use unique visual language to against metal problem also are parts of challenges in my artworks.

I always feel really lucky I can study art and I have the ability to handle with art. Because after I realized I like drawing and painting, I always visualized any metal problems and growing pains to different kind of monsters and elements in my world, which helped me to pass a hard time.

Please tell us about Amber Ma illustration.
My direction of illustration works is fine art illustration/fantasy illustration and young kids’ illustration.

The proudest of silk in my art life, I think they are the passion of imagination and visualizing the story. I like observing the life and picking the interesting elements to create a new world. Everything, every moment, every element could be a good story.

The inspirations for most of the projects are from her childhood experience (under the one-child-policy), Culture mystery story and human daily life.

My medium is watercolor and pen. I think for watercolor, the most important thing that it teaches me how to control and how to keep balance, and also respect the texture they make.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When I was a child, my mom always gave me lots of chalks and let me drawing everything on the ground. She told me I drew lots of weird creatures and telling different stories at that time.
