Meet Jared Auerbach of Red’s Best in Boston Fish Pier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Auerbach.

Jared, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a NON fishing family, but from my earliest memories I have been drawn to the ocean and fishing.

I have always romanticized the idea of harvesting seafood to feed my family and neighbors. This has stuck with me and our business now “supplies our neighbors with seafood” at a massive scale (although I will still wake up early on weekend mornings, catch striped bass in the harbor, fillet in the back yard and then deliver to my neighbors with my children in zip lock bags).

Red’s Best is in business to sustain the livelihoods of American small boat fishermen. We meet boats at the docks when they come in from the sea, take their entire catch, aggregate all the fish in Boston and then distribute worldwide from the Boston Fish Pier.

It is our goal in the future to find innovative ways to get our fish directly to end users.

Has it been a smooth road?
Growing a business has been an adventure. There have been a lot of trials and tribulations along the way, but over time we have been able to assemble a strong crew and we are all aligned behind the same vision.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Red’s Best story. Tell us more about the business.
We provide dockside services for independent American small boat fishermen.

We have built proprietary web based technology that enables us to handle a large quantity of small transactions. In a heavily regulated industry like commercial fishing, we are able to level the playing field for small boat fishermen by processing transactions so efficiently that we can compete at scale with the larger and more industrialized producers.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We have spent the last 10 years becoming the best in the world at aggregating fish from independent American small boat fishermen. Technology development has been the key to this success. We hope to spend the next 10 years becoming the best in the world at connecting end users to this amazing resource.
