Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Foley.
Katelyn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My first experience with Pilates was as a double dance major at The Hartford Conservatory in 2001. After a painful back injury during a dance performance, I found Pilates. It was a major rehab component and I’ve been hooked ever since. Core Pilates NYC is where I chose to be certified, coming from a dance background I loved how they were a classical Pilates studio. All I could think was “Ahh, my Plies and Tendus”. Since graduating in 2010, I’ve worked in private studios, health clubs, and runner’s clubs in both Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY. Realizing clients were coming in with more serious injuries I took more Anatomy and Physiology at The Kane School (now called Kinected) which takes a more rehab approach to Pilates. I feel more rounded as an instructor having studied at both studios. While in NYC you’re exposed to many different cultures/techniques (that’s one reason it’s an amazing City), I noticed some differences in just one exercise. I had to know more! So, I moved to Sydney, Australia and became a resident instructor, as well as Madrid, Spain. Looking forward to what Country may be next! After Australia I moved back to my roots, Boston. I landed an opportunity to grow a private practice in Copley Square, surrounded by other health practitioners in a Co-op facility.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My advice is to make sure you have a great support system behind you! I lucked out with the group of women I work with. They’re all young business owners, some who had a couple years on me, and they really helped me to focus on the steps I needed to take. Financially, it’s tough at first, I did a lot of “trades” to get my name out there, to get my website up, professional pictures, etc. Most of my business has been built by being socially present on Instagram, putting out content that is relevant/interesting/entertaining.
We’d love to hear more about K Foley Global Pilates.
I specialize in Pre and Post Natal clients. Not something I ever thought was going to be my niche, but found that with my extensive background working with pregnancies (and word of mouth) I’m lucky enough where women feel very comfortable with me. I never treat them like they’re fragile beings, but strong ladies that are training for the biggest workout of their life! Other clients include injuries in back/knee/posture/scoliosis as well as athletes. I’m most proud that the studio is exclusively private. You will work in a beautiful studio overlooking Trinity Church, one on one with an instructor that is going to get you to your goals and beyond. No distractions of another class going on in the room, or other privates, so you can focus.
Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
