Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Bicknell.
Robert, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have had a lifelong love of both photography and the outdoors, especially for the New England coast and mountains. Working on a continuum from realism to abstraction I try to capture a sense of place in my images of the ever-changing beauty that surrounds us.
Mountain sunrise, abstract white birches, morning fog, stream reflections and old farms and barns are some of my favorite subjects.
The two most important rules of photography for me are “lighting is everything” and “you have to be there”.
I am an active member of the Bedford Center for the Arts Photo Group in Bedford MA. My work is frequently on display and available for sale at several area gift shops, galleries and restaurants in addition to being available online. I also participate in several art and craft fairs and shows throughout the year.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
As I indicated earlier, I have a great love of New England, its coast , mountains lakes and streams.
I try to capture images that describe the spirit of these special places in my work.. I also enjoy travelling and try to depict the special sense of place I find in my travels.
Some of my images are clearly representational and presented as such while others are more obscure and sometimes abstract.
I produce both digital images and prints, but I believe that the print is really the ultimate product that expresses my vision and emotion.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
I would define success as being able to express my feelings through my art and to be able to share that with family, friends and patrons. I think to be a success one has to possess a passion for ones subjects and an openness and willingness to share that passion and ones skills and techniques with others.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My work is visible onlne on my website at www.robertbicknellphoto.com (in the process of being rebuilt) and on instagram at @robert_bicknell_photo.
During July and August this year I will be having a solo show at Nashoba Brook Bakery in West Concord MA and on September 22 I will be participating in the Lexington MA Chamber of Commerce annual Art and Craft fair.
