Meet Peter L Brown of Tiny & Sons Auto Glass Co. in South Shore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter L Brown.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the practice, why don’t you give our readers a few quick bullet points about you and your story.
The Basics:
Number of years in business? 40 years since 1976

When did you first start working with your dad?
My Dad had a second job working with junk yards saving used auto glass for different yards on the south shore. My Brothers and I use to ride along with him on weekends, actually it was my Mom saying “Jim if you don’t take them with you don’t come home “…. We were a little crazy. My Dad taught us the trade and how to get along and work together.

How many team members did you start with? How many do you have now?
It was my brother Ed and me, at the beginning.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a very rewarding experience. At the beginning it was rough. My dad left his job in 1976 to go out on his own. This was during the Gas shortage, the economy was in a downturn and interest rates were on the rise. He had five kids to raise. I remember us selling blueberries out front of our house to help out.
The Auto Glass industry was just starting to evolve to a mobile industry, we did everything on the road… My brothers and I worked part time with him while we held jobs elsewhere. I remember when we bought our first van it was 6 years old and the interest rate was 21%. My Grandfather lent us the down payment.

I am most proud of the legacy my father left us. We are a community based business, He instilled in us a culture of volunteerism and giving back whenever we can.

Our commitment to customer service. Tiny always says that “customer service is a family tradition”

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing! I truly believe that our experience’s formed the foundation of the company that we are today. Our Employees are family to us. They know that the company was created with family in mind.

Tiny was way ahead of the curve on equal pay, supplying benefits when other small companies were not. And always making sure that the family came first. Birthdays. School outings, sporting and after school events or even if they had issues with home alone. My father encouraged employees that had family that it was ok to bring the kids if there was no alternative. (He just put them to work 🙂 )
