Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Daria Hornung.
Dr. Hornung, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I knew I wanted to be a dentist since I was nine years old. When I was about four years old, I had a really bad experience at a dental office, having a tooth pulled with no anesthetic. Then, when I was nine, I had an amazing experience. It made me realize that I wanted to be the type of dentist that treated me at age nine and help people overcome their dental anxiety. When I was sixteen, I was fortunate to be hired as a patient care coordinator, at a multi-specialty dental office in San Francisco, at which I worked evenings and Saturdays for five years. The experience I received at that dental office, has solidified my career choice.
During my training at Tufts Dental School, I met my husband, Dr. David Hornung. After graduation, we worked as associate dentists at a few different dental offices. However, we always knew we wanted to own a dental office. We also knew we wanted to stay local and provide the best possible dental care to Boston and nearby communities. We wanted a small family dental practice that would allow us to develop personal relationships with our patients and team. In 2014, at my bother-in-law’s white coat ceremony at Tufts Dental, we approached our former professor, Dr. David Leader. After half joking about buying his dental practice, we found out that he was indeed considering selling, and taking a more active role as an educator at Tufts Dental. A few months later, we ended up owning Dr. Leader’s dental practice. After many late nights and weekends spent at the office, we were able to convert Dr. Leader‘s practice to D2 Dental Associates. Dr. Leader, who became a good friend of ours, is still presently practicing as an associate dentist at D2 Dental Associates.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is almost never a smooth road, especially in the beginning, when you are new to the concept of ownership. It’s a tremendous responsibility towards patients, employees and a local community. The greatest struggle was getting the right team together with a similar mind set and drive. One of the most important things to me, is positive energy in the office. More people have severe dental anxiety, or “the white coat syndrome”, then you may think. When everyone gets along in the office and things run smoothly, it creates a positive atmosphere, allowing patients to feel at ease.
Looking back on this journey of becoming a business owner, the growth and accomplishments in the past three years were worth all the stressful meetings, phone calls, emails, late nights and weekends spent in the office. I can proudly say that D2 Dental Associates is considered one of the best dental offices in Malden and the nearby areas.
