Meet Jason Colby of Little Sister Charters in Quincy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Colby.

Jason, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been fishing since the early 1960’s and in 1976 started working on charter boats and commercial fishing boats. You can say I’ve been fishing professionally for well over 40 years. Growing up, Quincy was always known to be famous as “The Flounder Fishing Capitol of the World” so when I moved to Quincy in 1998 I found it only natural to start taking charters for flounder. The striper fishing is also great and very popular so I take a lot of people for them as well. Stripers in The Boston Area can get quite large so that is more of a thrill for less experienced anglers.

“Old Salts” that grew up flounder fishing are the bulk of my customers as flounder fishing is both fun and nostalgic. It’s also a pretty sure way to bring home some great eating fillets!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For the first 10 years or so, there was also great cod fishing in and around Boston Harbor. That fishing has disappeared because the commercial draggers practically wiped the cod out in The Gulf of Maine and its surrounding waters. It’s a shame, the “state fish” of Massachusetts is cod and IF we caught one, we are not allowed to keep it! Not to worry, we have not caught a cod in Boston Harbor in many years…..

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Little Sister Charters – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
As a professional fisherman and former “fish processor”, I can not only put people into exciting fishing action but I also fillet the fish for them at no additional cost. The fish that I cut are every bit as professionally filleted as what you can buy in a good quality fish market (only fresher).

My customers are a great range from novice to experts and I give all the people that need help, all the help and training necessary to make their experience positive and successful.

Flounder and striper fishing is done in the very protected waters of Boston Harbor where there is always an island or land mass to keep up in the lee of any wind. If needed, that protection can always keep the water flat and comfortable so in twenty years, I have never had anyone get sea sick in The Harbor.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m always trying to find “the perfect boat”: One that has a shallow enough draft so I can get into places few other boats can fish. A boat that is big enough and stable enough to fish at least 6 people safely and comfortably and gets them to the fishing quickly. With all that in mind, the boat (Little Sister) this year is a 30 foot Cobra Predator Catamaran with twin 250 HP Suzuki four stroke engines. She draws less than one foot of water and can comfortably cruise at 45 MPH with top speeds close to 80 MPH!
