Meet Astrid Ortiz of Kidz Wishing Well in Northshore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Astrid Ortiz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Astrid. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in my native Country of Colombia, without all the technology and what I call “one step crafts” available this days, had in many ways help to develop my creative and artistic mind. My love for children and passion for entertainment planted in my head for many years, to look for a way to incorporate all of this and start my own business. It took years to build it from the ground up. The moral support that I receive from my own clients helps me tremendously to believe in myself. Once, I read an article about entertainment that motivated me to stopped being hard on myself and to embrace my talents at whatever level I think they are. The article mentioned that even if one’s think our creativity is at a level 4, there are other people that are a level 1. Therefore, this people will love and appreciate our work.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being a mom of three children, having a full time job and trying to start a business was really hard, stressful and difficult to balance. Not being able to dive in full into the business because I needed a pay check to help raise our family was always a struggle. Now that my children are young adults, it have facilitated me to focus in the business.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We specialize in unique children’s events, birthday parties’ professional face painting. Our beautiful tablescapes are like taken out of a fairytale book. We craft and build our own props which give our events an exclusive decor. Children’s imagination is definitely our creation.

My proudest moments are when children say to me that I’m “the best artist” or that it was “the best birthday party ever”. When I see their faces glow then I know I had done a good job. One of our special day for my associate Maria Cepeda and I, was winning the Best Representation Award at “Tablescapes Around the world”. This annual event is hosted by AIR a non-profit organization in Portsmouth NH that help empowering young women through the arts. Having clients using our services for years in a row is very uplifting. The MIT “Scratch day” yearly event is definitely one of our favorite.

Getting a call from NH home magazine to collaborate for an article about setting up a table for the holidays was very memorable. Giving back to the community is very important to us. Participating and offering our services to non-profit events to raise fund for children is part of our journey.

What were you like growing up?
Extremely crafty, very creative and artistic. I could build anything that my mind set off to do. I was always very competitive/perfectionist, always wanted my projects to be the best. I had a great passion for children, books. Anything fancy and unique always cough my attention, from a very swirly font to the smallest details in a picture of a children’s book.
